LearnHausa Digital
Hausa language learning platform

An interactive digital platform teaching Hausa language and culture to young people and diaspora communities worldwide. LearnHausa preserves cultural heritage while making language learning accessible and engaging.
The Challenge
The Hausa language, spoken by over 70 million people, is at risk of declining among younger generations, especially those in the diaspora and urban areas. Many second and third-generation Hausa children abroad cannot communicate with their grandparents, and cultural traditions are being lost as families become disconnected from their roots.
The Solution
LearnHausa Digital offers gamified language lessons with audio pronunciations by native speakers, cultural stories and proverbs, virtual reality tours of historical sites in Northern Nigeria, and a community feature connecting learners with native speakers. The platform adapts to each user's level and includes content for children, teenagers, and adults.
Impact
Overall Winner of the STEMify Africa Challenge 2022 - the inaugural year. This was the first team to receive international university scholarships through the program, setting the precedent for future winners. The platform now has over 10,000 active users across 15 countries.
"We built this for our cousins abroad who wanted to learn our language but had no resources. Now we receive messages from people all over the world thanking us for helping them connect with their heritage."
— Sadiya Muhammad Lawal, Team Lead - LearnHausa
